Biography Summary
Dr. Jackson practiced medicine in West Chester from 1878. In 1894, the Jackson family came to Denver for treatment of his wife's tuberculosis. Dr. Jackson opened the Denver Eye Clinic in 1898.
Dr. Jackson's single most important contribution to the daily practice of Ophthalmology was the invention of the cross-cylinder test for astigmatism.

Born in West Goshen, Chester County PA of Holliday and Emily Jackson. The Jackson family is originally from Lincolnshire England and then settled in Ireland. Two generations later, Dr. Jackson's direct ancestors migrated to the young colony of Pennsylvania.
He suffered from diphtheria while practicing medicine in West Chester, which left him partially paralyzed, with weakness in the legs and eye movements. This was the beginning of his study of Ophthalmology. During his long period of convalescence he studied an 1864 publication of Ophthalmological innovations that had revolutionized the field and created a distinct field of Ophthalmology.
