Corneal Conditions

A wide array of conditions are included in this area. Some of the most commonly treated conditions include pterygia, keratoconus, dry eyes, corneal swelling, and corneal trauma.

A pterygium is a flap of scar tissue that can grow across the cornea. It is brought on by exposure to wind and sun, common occurrences in Colorado. Occasionally this flap of scar tissue will warp the corneal surface or block light as it enters the eye. In these instances it is best to remove the pterygium and perform a transplant of healthy tissue in its place.

Keratoconus is a progressive corneal disease characterized by gradual steepening and thinning of the central corneal tissue and often leads to corneal scarring. In the early stages of this condition, it can be managed with specialty contact lenses. If the disease progresses farther, sometimes a corneal transplant is required.

In Colorado, a common corneal problem that we deal with is dry eyes. Our climate and altitude add to this issue. Frequently, the use of over the counter eye drops will help with this condition, but when it becomes severe, other alternatives may be needed. Dr. Giltner has extensive experience in the treatment of this condition and we offer several options.

Less than perfect results from refractive surgery sometimes leads to an irregular corneal surface. With our state of the art technology and our expertise in fitting specialty contact lenses, we are often able to help patients overcome these issues.
