Corneal Surgery
A wide array of surgical procedures is included in this area,
but among the most common conditions treated are corneal scars,
corneal swelling, corneal trauma and pterygium removal.
Corneal transplant surgery is performed to replace a cloudy,
scarred cornea in an effort to restore vision. Some diseases
cause the cornea to thin and in these cases cornea tissue
is transplanted to restore the structural strength of the
cornea.
A pterygium is a flap of scar tissue that can grow across
the cornea. It is brought on by exposure to wind and sun,
common occurrences in Colorado. Occasionally this flap of
scar tissue will warp the corneal surface or block light as
it enters the eye. In these instances it is best to remove
the pterygium and perform a transplant of healthy tissue in
its place.
