Cataract Surgery
A cataract is a cloudiness of the natural lens inside your eye, which causes varying degrees of vision loss. The lens inside your eye is your focusing mechanism much like the lens of a camera. Almost everyone will develop some form of cataract as they get older.
Frequently patients complain of light sensitivity, glare/flare of lights at night, difficulty driving at night or in bright sunlight, cloudy or blurred vision for distance or near, or changes in color perception. Since there is presently no medical treatment for cataracts, the best option is cataract removal with implantation of a man-made lens called an IOL (Intraocular Lens).
After a complete eye examination, Dr. Giltner will discuss your best options regarding cataract surgery. Special measurements will be done to determine the power of the IOL that will best suit your needs.
The procedure to remove the cataract and implant the IOL takes about 15 minutes. It is done as an out patient surgery using only a sedative or mild anesthesia to keep you comfortable during the procedure. The incision is so small that sutures are not usually necessary. The cataract is removed using a technique called phacoemulsification, a form of ultrasound. After the cataract is removed, the IOL is placed through the small wound into the patient's eye. The procedure is then complete.
The procedure is virtually painless and most patients only experience mild discomfort for a short time afterwards. Eye drops are used following the procedure for several days. Often patients are seeing better the very next day.
With advances in today's technology, we are able to offer many options to our patients needing cataract surgery. These options include standard, multifocal, and toric IOL's. Financing is available for the specialty IOL's.
